Causes
The probable causes for the above mentioned symptoms are: damaged or conflicting installation files in temporary folders and/or damaged registry data.
Solution
Warning! The following procedure involves deleting files from temporary folders. Although deleting files in temporary folders can be considered safe, this is done on your own risk!
To fix the problem, carefully follow these steps:
- Download the MSN Messenger update from this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/resources/msnmessenger/default.mspx
- Verify that the downloaded installation file is in the correct language and for the correct Pocket PC version.
- Run the installation file by double-clicking on it.
- In "Modify, repair or remove the program" select Remove. See screenshot image below.

- When installation has finished, click Finished to close the installation program.
- Open Windows Explorer and browse to C:\Windows\Temp\
(Assuming that the Windows installation is in C:\Windows\) - Select all files and directories by pressing CTRL+A on your keyboard or selecting menu Edit - Select All.
- Press Shift+Delete to delete all files directly. Optionally but not recommended; press only Del to move them into Recycle bin.
- Answer Yes to delete all the files.
- Open folder C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temp\ , replacing "User" with your username.
This is assuming that you are using Windows XP or 2000, with the user profile directory being C:\Documents and Settings\. In Windows NT, the profile directory usually is C:\Winnt\Profiles\. For Windows 95, 98 and ME users, skip to step 13. - Repeat steps 8 through 10 in this directory.
- Re-run installation by double-clicking the file mentioned in step 2 again.
- Follow the instructions and complete the installation.
