In a few days, I am going to start a brand new PDAgold.com version with regular updates (including the most comprehensive device reviews) and many other improvements. Since English is not my native language, I'd like to ask someone for help with grammar and some other language stuff. If you think you could help me, please send me a message to p@vel.cz. Your help will be very appreciated! Pavel Koza

.: Word Mojo Review

Author - Grant Fritchey :: User rating - 3.5/5 gems   (8 votes) :: Views - 8592
January 07, 2004 :: Got your Mojo woikin? Word Mojo is fun, fast, word game from Astraware. You get scramble of letters & a board on which to place them, similar to scrabble. It's a challenging game that's sure to capture your attention and keep you busy for a while.

Work that Mojo

Are you a die-hard Boggle fan? Need new word challenges because you've wipe the floor with your family for decades? Then you must be my wife. Seriously, Word Mojo is similar to a game of Boggle, but your opponents are yourself, that clock, and the jumble of letters. The game is quick, easy to learn, hard to master. Everything a game on a PDA should be. I still can't believe that 'woikin' isn't a word. After all, it goes hand-in-hand with Mojo...

Astraware's Word Mojo installs nice clean and simple, as you would expect. The interface is simple and intuitive. Almost no instructions are needed to start to play. The graphics are clean and easy to read. The sound is crisp & clean, although I found the music a bit irritating after a while, but then, I can't spell, so the pressure was on. The online help is concise and clear and only needed for the details it provides. There are 50,000 words in the dictionary. Probably about 49,500 more than I needed to play the game, "CAT", "BAT", "SAT", "RUN","FUN"....

Game Play

You'll be presented with the option of timed or untimed games. My recommendation, assuming you're the wipee & not the wiper in those word games at home, is to start with untimed. It takes some of the pressure off. Then you get the option of a set of letters; "Easy - 6 Letters", "Hard - 7 Letters." Personally, I found trying to make enough words using 6 letters a bit of a challange and 7 letters was easier. But that's because I'm not a word smith. If I were, I'd be going for the big points. See, the game scores based on the letters used, similar to Scrabble; "E" is worth 10, "W" is worth 40. Then there are some wrinkles on top. In order to go the next round, you have meet a minimum score. You're given six trays of letters, one at a time, from which you create words. Once you've laid out some words, dragging & dropping the letters into place, interlocking the words, you click submit and the words are scored.

To really pump up your scores there are several, what I think are very difficult, things you can do. If you use all the letters in a given tray, you get a bonus. There are a number of colored squares on the grid. Each letter from a valid word that is on one of the colored squares is added to your "Mega Mojo" letter set. Then, at the end of the round, assuming the letters can make up a word, you're given a 30 second opportunity to turn these letters into a word for bonus points. There's also a mysterious "Max Letter Words" which I was never able to achieve. I suspect it means using all six or seven letters in a single word.

Conclusion

I'm no good at word games, but I found this one a lot of fun to play. It's easy enough to learn and play that you won't feel frustrated. It's challenging enough, especially in timed-play, that your attention won't wonder. :: The final rating is 100%
