Google Web   PDAgold.com

In a few days, I am going to start a brand new PDAgold.com version with regular updates (including the most comprehensive device reviews) and many other improvements. Since English is not my native language, I'd like to ask someone for help with grammar and some other language stuff. If you think you could help me, please send me a message to p@vel.cz. Your help will be very appreciated! Pavel Koza

April 22, 2004 :: I believe that it is not a surprise for you that Microsoft has recently introduced the new, improved version of Windows Mobile 2003 operating system. Because it doesn't offer a large number of improvements worth of being a new major version, it was named "Second edition". It is available for both Pocket PCs and Smartphones. In this article, I will show you a lot of screenshots comparing the old and the new system head-to-head.

If you have never heard of Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edtion before, you'll be probably very pleased. However, there is one important thing - I don't have a real Windows Mobile 2003 Second edition or at least upgraded device, yet. All screenshots you will see are taken from SDK for Pocket PC which is already being available for developers. I don't think that there will be a lot of major changes in the final system, but that depends mainly on the manufacturers.

Comparison of the basic version and the Second edition

Well, it's time to kick off. Just for sure, the "old" version screenshot is on the left, on the right you will find pictures of the "new" version. Almost every form in the Pocket PC system was changed, but I will show you only things that have changed more than just by moving a form fields.

...and that's all I was able to get from the Emulator. Some other important changes like WiFi security improvements or Transcrieber updates cannot be recognized from screenshots. It is also possible that I have missed something, but I hope I did not:)

I don't want a rectangle, I want a square!

Finally, I got some pictures of a square screen. It is now fully supported, as well as hi-res modes 480 x 640 and 480 x 480 pixels. I won't show you hi-res images because everything is the same, just bigger:)

Conclusion

So much for the preview:) Please don't forget that all the images were taken from SDK, not a real device, so don't blame me if something will be different. Anyway, the screen rotation looks great and I hope that the upgrade will be available for more devices than expected.
