Big Review of FSC Pocket LOOX C550

If you have not taken the Fujitsu Siemens Computer company too seriously up till now, this may be a good time to start. Its portfolio of pocket devices is going to increase dramatically during the next few months, so it will be in the fight for first place amongst Pocket PC device manufacturers, at least in terms of product range. However, I will jump too far ahead and will instead attend to what I have on the work-table in front of me now. It is the FSC Pocket LOOX C550 device, which I would like to introduce to you thoroughly today.

Before I start delving into the properties and skills of this good-looker, I will say just a few words in general. The “Five-hundred” series should be the basic series of Pocket LOOX products for the following months. If you browse the Fujitsu Siemens Computer web page, you find that this series is divided into two branches. One branch is marked as N5xx (the LOOX N520 model reviewed recently comes under this heading), the second branch bears the name C5xx. The main difference between these two branches is that the “N” line contains an integrated GPS module, whereas the “C” line does not have the integrated GPS module. There are other differences between the individual models, but we will talk about this in a separate article called the Difference review of the FSC Pocket LOOX N560 device.

Finally I would like to thank the Sunnysoft company for their kindness in lending me the device for the review.

What is in the box?

The Fujitsu Siemens Computer company is, apart from their approach to packaging, a very creative company. For a long time now all LOOXs have been packaged in a compact greenish box, and this case is no different. Judging from its dull exterior alone you would not realise what treasure is hidden inside the box. The complete contents of the package are as follows:

  • FSC Pocket LOOX C550 device
  • Battery
  • Stylus 2x
  • Power supply with exchangeable sockets and a connection for direct charging
  • Protective case
  • Cradle
  • USB cable with cable end for USB Host utilisation
  • CD-ROM
  • 5 points voucher for software purchase at http://www.pocketloox-choice.com/
  • Quick-start handout
  • Warranty information

We will describe the device, battery and stylus later; for now we will attend to accessories. The cradle is the same as in the LOOX 4xx series. It looks minimalist; in fact it is a flat base with four rubber legs, data connector and one plastic piece holding the device in the viewing position. The cradle’s base is heavy and because of this it is very stable despite the relatively small space that it occupies on the table. The detachable cable is another strong point, thanks to which you do not have to waltz around with the whole cradle, but rather just the light and storable USB cable. Besides the data connector there is an output connector for headphones on the back side. Well, now that I have started speaking about the detachable cable, I should also mention that it is 120 centimetres long, and has the data connector for connecting the LOOX on one side combined with a socket for power supply connection, while on the other side there are a couple of USB connectors – one USB Client and one USB Host.

The protective case is in the same style, therefore simple and lacking any decoration. It is in fact one inflexible piece of leather (perhaps artificial) sewn together with elastic strips at the sides, where you simply insert the LOOX. Unfortunately, a waistband clip is missing, so if you want to carry the LOOX fashionably low, you will have to look around for cases made by third parties.

The power supply is of the most common type found on Pocket PC’s. It has exchangeable connectors, so you can get connected both in continental Europe and in the USA and Great Britain. A connection which enables direct charging without the need to use the USB cable or the cradle, is at its disposal as well.

And now we come to the last of the boxes contents. The final things we find in the package are a CD-ROM with bonus applications, a voucher exchangeable for 5 points worth of software purchase at http://www.pocketloox-choice.com/, and a concise manual for beginners, a very voluminous tome with information on safe usage plus a few leaflets.

Design

Because C550 numbers among the “5xx” model family, it is no surprise that it is indistinguishable from the FSC Pocket LOOX N520 device reviewed recently. Although all the edges are rounded, right-angles and general axial symmetry are the main features of the device. Much like the N520, the C550 is made with a two-colour plastic – grey and silver. Regarding its dimensions (4.56 x 2.79 x 0.55 inches / 116 x 71 x 14 millimetres) and weight (5.02 ounces / 145 grams), you feel it in your hand, but thanks to the round edges already mentioned you can hold it comfortably without problems. Mechanical fabrication is indeed not totally perfect, nevertheless, barring some minor inaccuracies in the construction of particular pieces and an occasional squeak of the back side there are no fundamental problems.

Regarding general appearance, it will be a matter of taste as to how much the new LOOX will catch you. There are certainly more attractive devices on the market, but for most users it is more important what the device can do, rather than what it looks like. Not everybody has to like round shapes and curves, do they? :) If we proceed with a classic check-up of the device’s body, we have to logically start with the front side with main display. Midway above the main display is the on/off button and on both sides, left and right, there is one elongated LED diode for displaying various states and notices. Under the display there is again a fully symmetrical cross controller (however it is not a joystick, but a four-way D-pad) with a separate centre section functioning as an independent confirmation button. On both sides we find a couple of programmable buttons preset for opening the Calendar and Contacts functions on the left side and E2C (application for control of wireless modules) and return button for the Dnes screen on the right side. The function of these buttons can easily be changed (for example to the function for classic WM5 soft-keys), moreover each button recognises long and short pressing, so it is possible to assign up to 8 different functions to these four buttons. Also the option to lock the keys while the device is off is pleasing, thereby avoiding any annoying surprises when the device turns itself on by mistake in your pocket. Furthermore, the D-Pad buttons are blue-lighted, therefore it is possible to work with the device in absolute darkness.

On the other hand the back side of the device is largely free of any interesting elements. The major part of the surface is occupied by a shifting little door, which covers the replaceable battery. For better stability on the work-table there is a thin rubber strip adhered to the little door. A rubber cover with a symbol indicating it is a connector for external antenna above it looks promising. If you remove the cover, no pleasant surprise results, the opening is empty. For reasons of economy the same chassis is used for both for the “N” line of LOOXs with navigation (or more precisely with integrated GPS module) and the “C” line; on the “C” line model without GPS, the hole is only covered over , not removed. The last thing worth mentioning is a slot for the stylus. The 105 millimetres long and very thin stylus is made of light metal, with both ends made of plastic. Due to its length it is comfortable to hold and equally pleasing is the fact that in case of loss or damage the manufacturer has included one reserve stylus as well.

Neither the upper nor lower part of the device offer anything unexpected or interesting. In the upper area we find a SD card slot, which is perhaps the best placement in regards to SDIO support and a classic stereo connector for headphones. In the lower part there are again a couple of routine fixtures, a data connector in the middle and a small opening for reset activation to the left.

The lateral sides offer a wholly different view. Whilst the right side is free of any controlling elements, on the left side we find, beside the infrared port, a handy button for starting the sound recorder (again programmable for two different actions) and a miniature opening for a microphone. In other words, there is no difference in comparison with the N520 (except for the display size), and the difference in comparison with the LOOX 720 is in no way dramatic.

Parameters

Now we will speak about what the LOOX C550 can actually do and what it offers to its users. But at this point I will state that if you are familiar with the preceding LOOX 720 model, or the previously reviewed new LOOX N520, this will be just a boring “recap” for you. There are not many differences.

The device is powered by an Intel XScale PXA270 processor, well known to all LOOX fans, clocked at 520 MHz. Like any other LOOX with a high-performance processor the C550 runs with the help of an applet to regulate the performance of the processor. Under the Settings menu you can find one automatic and three static options (according to the Pocket Hack Master programme the processor operates at 520 MHz, 416 MHz and 208 MHz frequencies). 520 MHz is too much for most applications, so you can achieve a pleasant extension of battery life by reducing the performance. Only one little thing bothered me, namely that if the device’s battery discharges and the device turns off, the processor speed always returns to Auto after recharging. Because of this I had to repeat all my battery life tests... The device operates with 128MB FlashROM memory and 64MB RAM, which is alright for Windows Mobile 5. The full capacity is of course not all available for the user’s needs, but after the HW reset I found I had 75,96MB FlashROM available for the data and applications and 35,22MB RAM for running applications.

If we believe that slow FlashROM memories were the main reason that the FSC did not finish their project to upgrade to Windows Mobile 5 for their 700 series of LOOXs, in the case of the C550 you do not have to worry about the speed of this type of memory. Of all the devices tested with Windows Mobile 5 the LOOX C550 offers one of the fastest Flash ROM writing speeds, which is really noticeable during use. It is not that fabulous while reading, but I have still found the C550 very fast subjectively in practice. I also offer the results of a comparative test of memory speed for comparison.

The device’s display has turned out well. It will engage at first sight with its intensive brightness, which can be set at eleven different levels, unfortunately only for battery-powered operation and recharging combined. Colour tuning is rather warm, which causes a slight yellow tint, however, if you do not have the opportunity to compare it with, for example, the “cold” Acer n300, you will not notice any discrepancies. You will, in contrast, appreciate the rich colours while browsing photos, which look absolutely brilliant. Otherwise it is a classic TFT display with 480x640 pixels resolution, which can display 65 thousands of colours simultaneously. The diagonal is 91 millimetres, overly wide black edges are just a small defect. The touch pad is very sensitive, but if you do not use a protective sheet, stylus sliding is not totally smooth and in my opinion the display would be more subject to scratching (no test, the device was not mine:) In contrast to the LOOX 720 the display does not suffer from a “shadow” while moving the stylus too quickly on the grey areas, so the general impression is very good.

You will perhaps not be surprised to discover that the sound capabilities are also made up of a classic three-way combination of loudspeaker/headphones output/microphone. Let’s start with the classic headphones output with 3.5 millimetres diameter. The first thing you will notice after connecting some high-quality headphones (Koss Porta Pro and Sennheiser HD 600 in my case) is that there is zero signal noise, which will not change even during a reproduction. It is a real experience for sensitive ears to hear absolute silence :) We find a very sophisticated applet for sound settings under the Settings menu, where you can adjust not only the headphone’s output volume (three levels), so you can feel free to use it in a very busy place, but also bass and treble intensity in nine levels and you can even turn on a sort of would-be 3D effect. Every listener can therefore create exactly the sound they want to hear. An integrated loudspeaker is placed behind the cursor controller and the buttons, which can be a problem especially during game playing, as your hands interfere with the free travel of sound towards you. The LOOX does not have an integrated telephone, but you will appreciate the high-quality sound during navigation, for example. Thanks to a high maximum volume and high-quality sound not even this task is a problem for the LOOX. The last from the trio of sound capabilities is the ability to record sound. A sympathetic configuration menu is again available, particularly for microphone sensitivity with three steady levels or one automatic. Thanks to the microphone and a button for sound recording on the side of the device the possibility of using the LOOX as a voice recorder presents itself and the result is, in a word, great. Quality declines with increased distance, but not dramatically, voice reproduction is still absolutely clear and distinct. Sound recording is the least valuable function, but the PDA is not the right tool for such usage. As usual I have attached a few samples of sound recordings [883KB] .

Just like the LOOX N520 this device also has a utility called Audio Path. With its help you can clearly define which output interface the sound passes through. By default it set so that if you want to play a song, it will start playing from the integrated loudspeaker. If you connect headphones, the sound will start coming through them. And so on and so on. Thanks to a utility you can set the LOOX N520 in such a way that the headphones and the loudspeaker will play SIMULTANEOUSLY. You have five options overall – headphones, integrated loudspeaker, amplifier, BT headset and the cradle output. It is your choice as to which combination you want.

Much like the LOOX N720 this LOOX also offers very rich possibilities of communication. The necessary interface for communication through USB is the basic option, which is accessible through a retroactively compatible (!) data connector at the bottom of the device. The LOOX can be both USB Client and USB Host, both in 1.1 versions. The infrared port can communicate in 115.2 kbps speed only, but together with the right programme it can also control consumer electronics, which was successfully tested with the Total Remote programme and a Toshiba LCD TV. You will be surprised by Bluetooth 1.2 version class 2. Fujitsu Siemens Computers have also given the green light to Broadcom (formerly Widcomm) and for their latest PDA they have chosen the Microsoft BT driver. Thanks to its AKU2 and A2DP profile it copes even with audio output for stereo headphones with very reasonable quality, however, PAN and the other profiles are still missing. I have tested the LOOX with my Dell Latitude X1 (Active Sync), Sony Ericsson T610 mobile phone (dial-up), BT GPS NaviLock BT338 (serial) and BT stereo headphones from HP and everything worked without problems on the first try. All in all – the driver is made by Microsoft, but if you need the most common functions only, you will not have a problem.

WiFi has its turn now. In contrast to the LOOX 720 it supports not only with the “B” type, but with the newer and faster “G” type as well. Nevertheless, despite a maximum theoretical speed of 54 Mbit/s you will probably use this device to connect to access points supporting the B type mostly. The option to turn on the saving mode and to save energy (WiFi is a real battery eater), and the likelihood of future LEAP (Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol) support, a safety utility developed by Cisco system company, number among the pleasing features of the WiFi module. The utility for WiFi configuration itself is not very sophisticated, and for this reason they have ConnectMobility-E2C programme in FSC. With its help you can create and configure any network you want, beginning with authentication (open network, shared network, WPA-PSK and WPA, through coding (no coding, TKIP, WEP), SSID, TCP/IP parameters, proxy server parameters to VPN client by Microsoft settings. The range and other parameters are comparable with other PDAs with integrated WiFi. The signal was sufficient in all rooms (yes, in the toilet as well :) in a panel building flat 3+1 with one AP by Asus (WL-530G), I did not experience any problems, even during a secure transfer.

A replaceable and rechargeable Li-ion battery with 1200 mAh capacity is integrated in the device. That isn’t much, but thanks to an innovation in Windows Mobile 5 (the option to use the full 100% of battery capacity for normal functioning) it is not a tragedy. The battery is recharges even during a USB cable connection; therefore you will not run low if you at least remember to carry the cable with you.

The LOOX registered the following results in a practical test:

  • Standard test of common usage, max. light – 2h45m
  • Video playback, max. light – 3h11m
  • Wifi turned on, not used to capacity – 3h09m
  • Bluetooth turned on, not used to capacity – 4h12m

Note: With regard to an error in Spb Benchmark the device is used to capacity by the opening of a big Word document, therefore it is necessary to take the result with a grain of salt – standard usage of PDA will not look like this.

The results are not brilliant, however, it necessary to bear in mind that everything is running at maximum during the tests. If you lower the speed of the processor, light intensity and eventually start using the various saving modes, operation time will be markedly higher.

Expansion possibilities

The Pocket LOOX devices always offer excellent possibilities for expansion of features and functions and it is no different with the LOOX C550 device. In contrast to the preceding series, the LOOX 700, a slot for CompactFlash cards is missing, but if you need a lot of space for your data, a hard disc connected through USB will be more than adequate compensation. It will not please some users (for example those who are used to browsing camera photos stored on a CF card while travelling on a better display than the integrated one), however, most will pay no mind to this.

Wait, a hard disc connected to a Pocket PC? Sure :) Thanks to USB Host technology it is possible. Charge levels are critical, but if you have extra charging capabilities for the hard disc, and eventually you can secure another sufficiently intense source of electrical energy, you can expand the storage capacity virtually without limit. It is important though to bear two things in mind. Firstly that the LOOX USB Host only has the 1.1 version, so the data transfer rate is no “whiz”, and also that Windows Mobile 5 does not recognise NTFS, so the disc must be in FAT16 or FAT32 format. Nevertheless, it works and that is important. I have tried a 40 GB disc personally. It was indeed necessary to connect an external charger, because the LOOX itself would not coped with the disc (in contrast to a notebook), but everything worked well afterwards. Only for fun: I tried to copy a 22MB file from an SD card through the LOOX to the disc and it took 220 seconds, which represents an average speed of about 100KB/S.

But that is not all. I have successfully tried other accessories with the LOOX as well. The Microsoft USB mouse operates, but the cursor is not visible (you fumble blindly :). A BenQ USB keyboard, 512 MB Pretec Tiny memory and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9 digital camera then operated at 100% usability. These last three devices even functioned simultaneously through a USB HUB, even though it was not perfect – things often froze up and only a SW reset helped... Connection with a digital camera is especially pleasing, when you can easily browse your photos on a great, large display. It is not totally smooth though, for example it takes about 15 seconds to upload 3MB photo; however, if you use a better browser able to upload consecutive photos against a background (e.g. Spb Imageer), it is not that big a problem.

It is possible to connect many more USB peripheries; just for fun I remind you of the list of functional USB accessories for the LOOX 720. Besides the ability to connect USB devices the LOOX offers support for SD cards, both memory and SDIO. I have tested this with my aged HP digital camera and after installation of the driver and one soft reset it worked without problems. Connecting a mobile phone through Bluetooth or an infrared port is an obvious use, connecting a projector through WiFi is not so common, but it should work as well (I have not tested it; I do not have a projector). It is thus clear that in the area of expansion the LOOX is very, very good.

Software

The Windows Mobile 5 operating system in the Premium edition (last edition so far with AKU2) is preinstalled in the Pocket LOOX C550 device. Its contents include, besides the operating system itself, a packet of all the regular Microsoft applications, except those which directly utilize an integrated phone module. You will thus meet all pocket Outlook applications (Outlook E-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, notes), a pocket version of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, a mobile Pocket Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and others. Furthermore there are a set of bonus applications available right inside the device, altogether the same as those in the previously reviewed LOOX N520.

The first one is a utility for the configuration of your Internet connection from a company called ConnectMobility E2C, which has an easy-to-use interface and an option to change the method and the target of the connection. It is interesting that it is available in two versions - PRO and Standard. The PRO version is for 30 days trial only, if you do not purchase the licence, it will automatically change to the Standard version. The difference is that the Standard version stores only one profile and it does not support VPN connection. It is of course up to you whether you believe purchasing the PRO version for 25€ (or 2 points from the LOOX choice) will be worthwhile.

The Secure Lock utility (formerly FSC Password) will appeal to those who wish to make a potential thief nervous. With its help it is possible to set a password (numeric or alphanumeric), which survives even the hardware reset and without its knowledge makes further use of the device impossible. For help in recalling the password you can type a reminder question which will display itself after five unsuccessful attempts to enter the password. Together with standard Windows Mobile security you can be sure that if someone takes possession of your device, he will not be able to access the data and will not enjoy the device itself. And if the legal user forgets the password, FSC technical support will help.

FSC MobileZIP is a pleasing expansion integrated into the classic Explorer, which is intended to work with ZIP archives. It can not only read, but also create archives of up to 4GB in size and it supports password protection and simple coding.

Among the other applications there is a utility for speedy access to the most commonly used programmes such as applications or applets launching, FSC Speed Menu, an enhanced programme for sound recording called FSC VoiceRecorder and a programme for scrolling the screen with the aid of the stylus.

We will not find much more than basic MS applications (ActiveSync 4.1 and Outlook 2002) on the enclosed CD. However, this is no reason to be sad, because you can “purchase” applications in accordance with your choice at the Pocket LOOX Choice server for a voucher situated in the package. According to information from FSC, 5 points are equal to 40-50€. In other words, you can “buy” applications for which you would otherwise pay quite a few EUROs. And you can buy several nice programmes for this price.

Price

The times when manufacturers could do whatever they wanted with prices due to low competition are now gone. Since the Dell Axim X51v was markedly discounted recently and the pricey Acer n300 represent very powerful opponents, the LOOX C550’s price has therefore been set to a pleasing 390EUR (VAT incl.). It is a matter of opinion as to whether this price corresponds to its value, but in my opinion you receive a fair deal in the form of a high-quality PDA for this price.

Personal impression, benchmarks & tests

We are heading towards the finale. I will be brief with my general impressions, because the new LOOX C550 is a sure thing, which does not bring much that is new. Most of the components have been tried out many times before and it would be a shame if the LOOX had some serious problems with them. The appearance and the size of the device is intended to be functional rather than decorative, this is a LOOXs’ tradition. It is also necessary to take into account that it is a device with a VGA display and ample equipment, thus its measurements are not totally compact.

The multimedia abilities of the device are very good, even excellent. I have already written about the high-quality sound reproduction, so if you use the device as an MP3 player as well, you will have no complaints. Not even the video playback will disappoint you. It is not indeed as perfect in this regard as, for example, the Dell X51v, but the benchmark result of 125% achieved in the TCPMP programme (formerly known as BetaPlayer) means a sufficient reserve in performance exists even if playing the complex videos of the highest quality. It was only necessary to change the video driver from the automatically set DirectDraw to Intel XScale. Gamers will be pleased by key rollover support; however, due to the shape of the controller and narrow spacing between the single buttons, I was not successful in playing games. I have found no performance problems with the LOOX even with the most sophisticated games.

Pocket PC BetaPlayer Benchmark
Acer n311 (VGA) 57,87%
Dell Axim X51v (VGA) 198,16%
FSC Pocket LOOX 720 (VGA) 121,43%
FSC Pocket LOOX C550 (VGA) 125,14%
FSC Pocket LOOX N560 (VGA) 139,69%
HP iPAQ hx4700 (VGA) 149,52%
HTC Universal (VGA) 89,94%

The clip used in this test was a large trailer in MPEG4 Divx/XviD format for Matrix Reloaded, so there were plenty of action and dynamic scenes :) It is replayed from a fast SD card, its resolution is 640x480 pixels, 24 f.p.s., video dataflow is 1500kbps and audio dataflow in MP3 format is 128kbps.

Possibilities for expansion are excellent and except for occasional problems with simultaneous connection of more USB devices through the USB Host I have not encountered any serious issues. This is valid for other features of the device as well, as the testing process occurred in a peaceful, even boring, atmosphere. Perhaps the only area which could do with improvement next time is the battery life. You of course have to bear in mind that all battery tests are carried out at maximum performance (the processor is operating at the highest speed, the light as well, no saving modes are used), nevertheless it is still perhaps the weakest area of the whole device. Unfortunately, it is beyond my power to carry out thousands of battery life tests, so if you want to say something about it, please contribute to the discussion.

If I summarize it all, the new LOOX will disappoint only the person who was looking forward to some revolutionary innovation from FSC workshop. The rest, especially those who use their pocket computer for work and have already seen a LOOX, will appreciate it. In case you are currently selecting your future device which has VGA display, you can definitely include the LOOX in the list of candidates. It is indeed not perfect, but for a reasonable price you will get very useful and reliable helper.

Detailed evaluation

Now, a few words on the detailed evaluation. The types of device can be classified as the Pocket PC, the Pocket PC Phone edition, eventually the Smartphone. Class is a distinction for various target groups, which is crucial for a correct understanding of the evaluation as a whole. Evaluation of individual elements is not absolute, but relative with regards to the class specified. An example: the weight of a device with VGA display, two slots and integrated BT/WiFi duo would receive nine in the class for “demanding users”, whilst a device with QVGA display, one slot and no radio of the same weight category would receive three in the “beginners” class. The date of evaluation is also important – if I evaluate an integrated 1.4 MPix resolution camera today, it would receive 10 points, because there is nothing better mounted in the PDA these days. If it were evaluated in half a years time, when 2MPix integrated cameras will become available, it would have received less points.

If you have some comments on the evaluation, please contribute to the discussion. I do not do the evaluation for myself, but for you to have some guidance in your choice. If you think find you disagree with something, feel free to say so :)

Notes: The evaluation is in a range of 1-10. The higher the number, the closer the result is to an ideal. If a device received 10 points in the “Appearance” category, it means that it is unearthly beautiful. If it received 10 points in the “Weight” category by contrast, it is a demonstration of its extremely light weight.

... well, I can go to bed finally :)
